Circumstance launches work experience programme

Circumstance distillery in Bristol, UK, is launching a work experience programme to encourage women to seek a career in spirits production.

One successful candidate will get to shadow a range of roles across the company’s Circumstance distillery (whisky and rum) and its Psychopomp micro-distillery (gin, aquavit, absinthe and digestifs) over the course of a week.

The initiative has been launched to raise the profile of distilling as a career option for women.

Stephanie Peck, head of operations, said: “We were recently interviewed by a student and asked why we thought there are less women than men working in the spirits industry and very few specifically in production.

“This made us think about what we can practically do to help change the narrative and challenge the gender-based stigmas associated with the spirits industry. It is important for women to see that opportunities don’t just exist in marketing and branding; women can own, run and operate distilleries.”

The programme will include hands-on experience across all aspects of a working distillery, from mashing, fermentation and distillation, to cask sampling and blending. They will also undertake a gin recipe development project, where they will research, write, and create a gin recipe to a specific brief.

As well as practical experience within production, the candidate will also spend some time shadowing operations, FOH, sales and marketing roles.

So, who can apply and how?

  • The programme is open to anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary and is aged 18 or over.

  • It will take place from 13th – 17th February 2023, with a contribution towards travel and accommodation available (maximum £500).

  • To apply email your CV and a covering letter expressing your interest to info@microdistillery.co.uk.
