English Whisky Guild appoints first CEO

Morag Garden, CEO of the English Whisky Guild

The English Whisky Guild (EWG) has appointed Morag Garden as its first CEO as maturing stocks of English whisky are expected to hit a value of £1billion by next year.

Garden joins the EWG following a career focusing on environmentalism, legislation and production, including 10 years with the Scotch Whisky Association where she held the role of head of sustainability and innovation.

The announcement follows last week’s second annual general meeting of the EWG, which now comprises 23 member distilleries.

According to the organisation, around 50,000 casks of English whisky – valued at over £1bn – are expected to be laid down by the end of 2024.

Garden said: “I am delighted to represent the English Whisky sector which is continuing to grow, innovate and produce the highest quality spirit.

“I am looking forward to working with EWG members, with our supply chain, government and other key organisations to deliver the EWG’s vision for English whisky to be recognised globally as a respected choice for whisky drinkers.”

There are now an estimated 49 distilleries in England producing whisky, from Ad Gefrin in Northumberland to Pocketful of Stones in Penzance.

A full interactive map of all England’s whisky distilleries has been compiled by Cooper King.
