The OurWhisky Foundation appoints first executive director ahead of global restructure
Marissa Johnston, former global head of Diageo World Class & Advocacy, has joined the OurWhisky Foundation as executive director, marking a significant new chapter in the non-profit’s journey.
Founded by writer and presenter Becky Paskin in 2022, the OurWhisky Foundation has been steadfastly supporting and empowering women in whisky while advocating for a more inclusive and diverse industry.
Its initiatives have been widely embraced by the industry, from the Modern Face of Whisky, its free stock image library showcasing the diversity of whisky drinkers, to its renowned mentorship programme, which has so far guided 200 women working in whisky around the world toward their career goals.
With the mentorship programme now receiving seven times more applications than places available, the foundation is transitioning from a global approach into a new regional structure in order to provide more opportunities to women and non-binary individuals in need.
This spring will see the inaugural launch of two chapters: the UK (England, Scotland and Wales) and Ireland (Northern Ireland and the Rep. of Ireland). Each chapter will operate its own mentorship programme alongside regular networking events, workshops and excursions, providing opportunities for those in the industry to connect and learn.
Details about the 2025 mentorship programmes, including application dates, will be revealed later this month. Further regional chapters beyond the UK and Ireland will be announced in due course.
Becky Paskin, founder of the OurWhisky Foundation, will assist the team with the restructure and implementation of a new board of directors before transitioning into an advisory and advocacy role.
She said: “Since we started our mentorship programme in 2022 we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of applications and enquiries from women and non-binary individuals around the world. Although we’ve managed to support over 200 individuals in that time, it’s clear we need to transition to a new structure that can provide community and support to everyone who needs it.
“I’m delighted to welcome Marissa Johnston as our new executive director. Her proven track record in drinks advocacy and global leadership will aid us tremendously in what is set to be a significant year for the OurWhisky Foundation.
“I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved so far and am confident that under Marissa’s leadership our work will have an even greater positive impact on the whisky industry.”
With a robust background spanning over 15 years in the industry, Marissa has honed her expertise in brand management, advocacy, influencer and experiential marketing. She previously served as the global head of World Class & Advocacy at Diageo, where her passion for fostering trade advocacy has allowed her to manage successful global programmes, driving engagement and brand loyalty across diverse markets.
Marissa Johnston said: “I'm thrilled to be taking on this exciting new role. With my passion for advocacy and a deep-rooted commitment to empowering women in whisky, I am excited to leverage my experience to drive impactful change.
“Together, we will foster a vibrant community that supports and uplifts women, creating opportunities and celebrating their contributions. I look forward to collaborating with our partners to elevate our mission and innovate ways to engage and inspire.”
To support its new chapters, the OurWhisky Foundation is now also recruiting for two volunteer regional community and events managers to lead projects in each region, alongside other roles in its leadership team. Details of all available positions can be found here.
Brands and organisations interested in supporting the OurWhisky Foundation in Ireland and the UK are invited to get in touch.
The announcement comes as the OurWhisky Foundation releases its 2024 Impact Report.
