OurWhisky Foundation mentee selected for Nc’nean internship

Everest Marshall has been selected for Nc'nean's Women's Whisky Week

Everest Marshall, a mentee with the OurWhisky Foundation, has been selected from over 140 applicants to participate in Nc’nean distillery’s Women’s Whisky Week.

Marshall has been selected alongside two other women to participate in Nc’nean’s second annual programme, providing a deep dive into the workings of a distillery.

Over the course of a week (25-29 September), the three women will experience all elements of working at the distillery on the west coast of Scotland, including all aspects of production from milling, mashing, fermentation and distillation, to warehousing, foraging and bottling. They’ll also be provided with blending and sustainability masterclasses.

Women’s Whisky Week has been designed by Nc’nean to provide valuable skills and knowledge that participants can apply to practical roles within the distilling industry.

With female distilling and production roles within whisky at an imbalance across the industry in the UK, Nc’nean hopes this annual experience will encourage more women to consider careers within whisky distilleries.

Annabel Thomas, founder of Nc’nean distillery, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the calibre of talent and levels of energy put into so many of the applications. It was a super tough decision choosing between the final eight, and sadly we can’t host everyone.”

After ‘much deliberation’, three were chosen: Everest Marshall, through Nc’nean’s partnership with the OurWhisky Foundation Mentorship Programme; Cory Martin, who applied through the diversity in distilling partnership with Whisky Auctioneer and Heriot Watt; and Winnie Ng, who came through Nc’nean’s own channels.

On being selected for the 2023 internship, Marshall said: “I'm delighted to have been selected for the Nc'nean Women's Whisky Week. As an aspiring ‘woman in whisky’ from Argyll with a passion for Scottish spirits, the environment, and the relationship between them, I look forward to experiencing the working life of a distillery through the unique lens of Nc’Nean, with its inspirational female founder, industry-pioneering sustainable business model, and entrepreneurial culture.

“Thanks to Nc'nean and the OurWhisky Foundation for the opportunity.”
