Stamping out sexism: Making whisky shows safer spaces for women

Stamping out sexism: Making whisky shows safer spaces for women

Whisky shows and festivals are a fantastic place for consumers to discover new bottles and meet like-minded people, and for brands to get noticed by new fans.

However they can also represent a challenging environment for women, with regular anecdotal evidence of female exhibitors being overlooked by guests in favour of their male colleagues, singled out by disgruntled customers, tested on their knowledge or exposed to misogynistic and inappropriate behaviour.

Many shows have codes of conduct in place but do they go far enough to tackle sexism, and how can the world’s many thriving whisky shows become safer, more inclusive spaces for all guests?

Whisky Festival Attendees

This one hour virtual discussion, led by Millie Milliken, head of content for the OurWhisky Foundation, will examine whisky shows’ role in making the industry a more equitable place, plus what more can be done to ensure personal safety and tackle outdated attitudes toward women in whisky.

Topics for discussion include:

  • Bystander syndrome and how to effectively handle inappropriate behaviour

  • The joint responsibility of show organisers and exhibitors in eradicating sexist behaviour

  • The importance of inclusion and visibility in masterclasses and demonstrations

  • How to craft a clear code of conduct

  • How shows can create a friendly, welcoming environment for all

This virtual event hosted on Zoom is free to attend, but you must register in advance.
